“The Black Star Surfers” Documentary

Posted by admin On February - 11 - 2010

One of the major activities these days at the Black Star Surf Shop is the making of a documentary "The Black Star Surfers". The documentary is about how learning to surf can be empowering as it can provide a means of making a living. Meanwhile, the surfers more intimate relationship with, and understanding of, their environment and ocean also creates local environmentalism and community activism. This story is about a group of young Ghanaians who are some of the first in their country to surf and how they experience personal growth through a process of economic, environmental, and community empowerment. The film "stars" our very own Frankee, co-owner of Black Star. www.blackstarsurfshop.com

    Hi Jamir,
Thanks for your question. As you know, Ghana has a long history of slavery and was the portal for slaves leaving Africa and going to the new world and Europe.

The point of showing the slave fort, which is very near to where the Black Stars surf , is to show the people can overcome their history as surfing has been empowering (the opposite of slavery) to Frankee and some of the other locals. I hope this makes sense :-)

what does slavery have to do with surfing

I have watched this video several times and I smile. I think about the old Endless Summer Video, which was somewhat patronizing to the people. This video is much more positive and humanizing. I would like to see how the men who took lessons the first time are doing now. Please upload another video.
